Best Time to Visit Uganda for Gorilla Trekking

Daniel Okello 5 min readMay 16, 2026

Uganda has two dry windows — June to September and December to February — when Bwindi's steep trails are firmer underfoot and trekking times tend to run shorter. These months also carry the highest permit demand and lodge rates.

What a lot of first-time visitors don't realise: the "rainy" months of March–May and October–November aren't a reason to avoid Bwindi. Rain usually falls in short afternoon bursts, the forest is genuinely greener, permits are easier to get on short notice, and rates drop noticeably.

Quick guide

  • Easier trekking underfoot: June–Sept, Dec–Feb
  • Better availability, lower prices: Mar–May, Oct–Nov
  • Year-round: gorillas are habituated and trek daily regardless of season

If your trip revolves entirely around gorilla trekking rather than combining it with a Big Five safari, the shoulder seasons are worth serious consideration.
