Nyungwe Forest National Park, in Rwanda's southwest, is usually the second stop on a gorilla itinerary — and often the pleasant surprise of the trip. It's one of the oldest and largest montane rainforests in Africa, home to chimpanzees, twelve other primate species, and a genuinely thrilling canopy walkway.
The two headline activities
- Chimpanzee trekking: early starts, real forest tracking, no guaranteed sightings but strong odds
- Canopy walkway: a 160-metre suspension bridge 70 metres above the forest floor, no trekking fitness required
Two to three nights is enough to do both properly, and it slots neatly between Kigali and Volcanoes National Park on most routings.
